Fukuoka ACAP2010 Declaration
As the population of the Asia‐Pacific region is aging rapidly, we must realize a new social system that reduces ageism and promotes opportunities for all generations to learn, contribute, and care for each other in age‐friendly communities.
Participants in the 5th Fukuoka ACAP 2010 have responded to this argument with the wisdom and skills obtained by sharing best practices about surveillance systems, age‐friendly communities, social policies, health promotion, and caring through a plenary session, 4 symposia, a poster session, and 5 workshops.
At this meeting, we recognized again the necessities of stepping up international collaboration as well as internal efforts related to Active Aging. Although the situation of aging varies across countries, we learn more if we share information and ideas.
Rounding off this meeting, we declare as follows:
1. The statistics about population aging are the foundation of our knowledge and action. The authorities concerned should strengthen the data archives that researchers and policy makers depend on for describing the aging situation and developing harmonious solutions.
2. Good health over the life course is fundamental to Active Aging. The authorities concerned should integrate health promotion and disease prevention into the educational, social, medical, and long‐term care systems.
3. Social participation is necessary for Active Aging. The authorities concerned should sponsor educational campaigns and social policies to reduce ageism, promote universal design, and support inclusion of all generations in civic, educational, cultural, economic, and social affairs.
4. Security is an indispensable condition of Active Aging. The authorities concerned should improve the age‐friendliness of communities and economic systems and support training and certification of formal and informal caregivers.
5. Fukuoka City is a gateway for Asia, and should be a leader in the global exchange of knowledge and best practices about Active Aging.
